Who adult lessons are for
Adults come to riding for all sorts of reasons. Some always wanted to ride and finally have the time. Some rode as kids and miss it. Some have a child who rides and want to understand the sport. Others just bought a horse, or are thinking about it, and want to be safe and capable before they do.
Adult lessons at Blazin Hot Performance are for all of these riders. There's no upper age limit on learning something new, and no expectation that you'll ride like someone who started at eight years old.
First-time adult riders
If you've never ridden, you'll start with the ground skills and fundamentals every beginner needs. Adults often pick up the "why" behind each step quickly, which helps, although it can also lead to overthinking. Part of the job in early lessons is helping you relax enough to feel the horse instead of analyzing every movement.
Returning riders
If you rode years ago, some of it will come back faster than you expect, and some habits may need updating. Lessons can start with a check-in on where your riding is now, then build from there without rushing to where you used to be.
What adults can expect to learn
The content depends on your experience and goals, but commonly includes:
- Handling, leading and grooming with confidence
- Tacking up correctly and checking fit
- A balanced, secure position at the walk, trot and eventually the lope
- Clear, quiet aids for steering, stopping and changing speed
- Understanding horse behavior, so you can tell when a horse is relaxed, worried or testing you
- Goal-specific skills, such as Western riding and horsemanship, or pattern work for barrel racing and pole bending
Can adults take beginner lessons?
Yes. Adults are welcome at any level, including people who have never touched a horse. Being a beginner as an adult is completely normal. Many riders start in their thirties, forties or later.
Common concerns adults bring up
Adults tend to arrive with questions kids never think to ask. Fitness, old injuries, nerves after a past fall, or feeling self-conscious about being new are all common. None of these are reasons not to try. Share anything relevant when you request a lesson, including questions about physical considerations, so April can plan an appropriate first session and answer honestly. Our article adult horse riding lessons: it's never too late to start talks through these worries in more detail.
Can I ride a BHP lesson horse?
Yes. BHP's beginner-friendly lesson horses let adults learn without the cost and commitment of owning a horse. Many adults take lessons for a good while before deciding whether ownership makes sense for them.
Can I bring my own horse?
Yes. Adult horse owners are welcome to bring their own horse. Lessons with your own horse can address whatever is getting in your way, from general confidence and control to groundwork or specific problem areas. It's also a practical option for adults who bought a horse before getting lessons and now want help.
Private or group?
Many adults prefer private riding lessons, especially at first, because the whole lesson is shaped around them. Others enjoy the social side of group riding lessons with friends or a partner. Both are available.
How to request an adult lesson
Use the adult lesson request form. Choose your experience level, pick private or group (or "Not sure yet"), and tell us about your goals. Preferred days and times are helpful too, since many adults fit lessons around work. April will reply by phone or email with availability, location and current pricing.
