Who beginner lessons are for
Beginner lessons are the starting point for riders who have little or no time in the saddle. That includes children, teens and adults. It also includes people who rode a few times years ago, maybe on a trail ride or at summer camp, and never learned the fundamentals properly.
You don't need to be athletic, fearless or "a horse person" to start. What helps most is a willingness to listen and to go slowly at first. If you feel nervous, say so when you request a lesson. Nerves are common and they shape how the first lessons are planned, not whether you can take them.
What you'll learn
Every beginner covers the same core foundation at Blazin Hot Performance, adjusted to the rider's confidence and pace:
- Horse safety on the ground. How to approach a horse, where to stand, how to lead one, and the habits that keep you out of harm's way around a large animal.
- Grooming. Brushing and cleaning hooves, which is also how you learn to read a horse's body language.
- Saddling and tack basics. What each piece of equipment does and how it should fit, starting with watching and helping.
- Balance and position. Sitting in a way that moves with the horse instead of gripping against it.
- Steering and stopping. The two controls every rider must be able to rely on before anything faster.
- Walk and trot work. Once steering and stopping feel dependable, trotting comes next, with more added as confidence grows.
Why the basics come first
BHP teaches by a simple rule: correct first, consistent second, speed comes after. For a beginner that means a reliable stop matters more than a fast trot. Habits formed in early lessons tend to stay with a rider for years, so it's worth building good ones from the first day.

Can complete beginners take lessons?
Yes. Beginner lessons exist specifically for people with no experience. Nobody is expected to arrive knowing how to groom, saddle or steer. The first lessons spend real time on the ground so that when you do get on, you already understand the horse in front of you.
Do I need my own horse?
No. Most beginners start on one of BHP's beginner-friendly lesson horses. A steady, experienced lesson horse lets a new rider focus on learning instead of managing an unpredictable animal. Can I bring my own horse to a beginner lesson?
Yes. Some new riders already have a horse, perhaps a family horse or one bought before lessons started. You're welcome to bring it. In that case the lessons also look at how you and that particular horse work together, which can be very useful if the horse has habits you're not sure how to handle. Mention your horse's age, experience and any concerns in your lesson request so April can plan the first session.
Private or group beginner lessons?
Beginner lessons can be taught either way. Private riding lessons give a nervous or brand-new rider undivided attention. Group riding lessons can suit friends or siblings starting together. If you can't decide, choose "Not sure yet" on the form.
What to wear
Long pants, boots with a small heel, and layers you don't mind getting dirty. Western Washington weather changes fast, so bring a rain layer for much of the year. The full checklist is in what to wear to a horse riding lesson. Ask about helmets when BHP follows up on your request.
How to request a beginner lesson
- Fill out the beginner lesson request form. It takes about two minutes.
- Choose "Complete beginner" or "Beginner" for experience, and tell us about any nerves, past riding or physical considerations.
- April follows up by phone or email with availability, location and current pricing. Lessons take place at the BHP property in Roy or at a local arena when that's a better fit.
Pricing is still being finalized, so current rates are shared when BHP replies.
