Who kids lessons are for
These lessons are for children and young teens who want to learn to ride, whether they've been asking about horses for years or simply want to try something new. Some kids arrive fearless and need to learn patience. Others are shy around big animals and need time to build trust. Both are normal, and lessons are adjusted to fit the child in front of April that day.
Kids lessons also suit young riders who have done some riding and want proper instruction, including those thinking about barrels, poles or youth events later on.
What children learn
Lessons for kids cover the same foundations as any beginner program, taught in a way that suits a young rider's attention span and size:
- How to behave safely around horses. Walking calmly, staying where the horse can see you, and never standing directly behind a horse.
- Horse care. Brushing, picking hooves, and learning that a horse is a living partner with moods and needs, not a ride at a fair.
- Getting tacked up. Learning the names and jobs of the saddle, bridle and pads, helping with each step as they grow more capable.
- Riding fundamentals. Balance, a steady position, steering, stopping and walk/trot work, with more added as skills and confidence build.
- Listening and following instructions. Horses reward calm, clear communication, and kids learn quickly that shouting or rushing doesn't work.

What age can children start?
BHP doesn't publish a set minimum age. Whether a child is ready depends less on their birthday and more on whether they can listen to instructions, stay focused for the lesson, balance on a horse and follow safety rules. Tell us your child's age and a little about them in your request, and April can talk through whether it's a good time to start. Can kids with no experience join?
Absolutely. Most children who start lessons have never ridden. First lessons for kids spend plenty of time on the ground, so they get comfortable with the horse's size and movement before they're asked to steer anything.
Will my child ride a BHP lesson horse?
Most kids ride one of BHP's beginner-friendly lesson horses. That means families don't need to own, lease or transport a horse to get started, and children learn on a horse suited to new riders.
Can we bring our family's horse?
Yes. If your family already has a horse or pony, your child is welcome to take lessons on it. That can be a great way to help a young rider and the family horse understand each other better. Let us know about the horse's experience and temperament when you request a lesson.
Private or group lessons for kids?
Both formats are available. A private lesson gives a nervous child an instructor's full attention. Group riding lessons can be fun for siblings or friends who want to learn together. For a full comparison, see private vs. group horse riding lessons.
A note for parents
Parents are part of the process, especially early on. Dress your child in long pants and boots with a heel, arrive a few minutes early, and let the instructor do the teaching during the lesson.
